Green Space

There is a little bit of double meaning when talking about urbanism. There is "going green," the current popular slogan for being environmentally friendly. But just as important is creating green space in the city. While the two concepts are related and complementary to each other, they are quite different.

Green Space

Green space, including trees, grass, and foliage warm up city space and enhance the other components of a city.  Green space beautifies a city.  It adds to the sense of place. The benefits of green space are so well known that it seems funny to list them. Trees provide oxygen, shade in the summer, and reduce energy costs. City parks provide places to play and enjoy within walking distance of home.

Urbanism and the Environment

Urbanism is the ultimate in going green. When people are walking and using mass transit, far less gasoline is burned and carbon produced. Walking is also a healthy way to get around. Buildings that house multiple families use less heat than the same families each in a different house.
